ICT skills

Students have a meeting in the computer lab before starting the course they receive instructions and practice necessary to get computer for using tools on the Moodle platform.
ICT support will be available throughout the course.
Students are introduced to use login and password.

Number and length of contact lessons

The course is performed in a blended way, so a few lessons are given in presence of the students.
The lessons are of two hours each per week when in presence, lessons online should be of the same length and the lasting can be controlled by the teacher on the platform .

Tasks and interaction

Tasks are structured in 15 learning units.
Interaction is carried out through forum, e-mailing and skype.

Intervention

Trough the forum inside the Moodle platform is possible at every moment to interact between teacher-student/s and student-student.Interaction is of course possible in lessons in presence.

Forming groups

Small groups of learners are formed to performe role playing and pair works, both online and in presence.

Italian Photographic Contest

Today, the 9th May 2011, on occasion of the European Day festival, the proclamation of the winning photos of the Italian Photographic contest took place.

The winning photos

1.- “…lo scorrere del tempo.../ the flowing of the time” by Stefania Valandro. The winning photo of the category “Men and women around me".

2.- “Ingegno ed anatre / Immagination and ducks” by Giuliana Menon. The winning photo of the category “Imaginative products”.

3.- “Montagna / Mountain” by Lisa Ferro. The winning photo of the category “Animals and natural environments”.

The Italian learners and teachers of the Photographic Contest thank the partner jurors who have send their judgements on the photos of the contest. We thank especially the Finnish, the Portuguese, the Spanish and the Italian jurors whose judgements made our contest very exciting.

1. Opening

The Italian partners opened the meeting and welcomed the participants.

2. Presentation - work on

project

Presentations by each partner and discussion about interim evaluation of courses, and good practices as well as challenges identified so far:

The Italian partners presented their running online courses on Moodle platform (English level A1, Photography course, Cold War). Results have been shown about the present situation in comparison with the initial situation. The report showed that the use of social media have improved learners’ skills.

The Finnish partners presented their courses, both ended and running ones. They suggested, especially in the beginning, to take little steps, give time and don´t introduce too many tools as adult learners need time to master the social media. The Spanish partners presented their courses. At the beginning learners have been divided in 3 different levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. The main needs addressed were new technology tools and new media languages and next months will be spent using Facebook as tool to communicate in English among learners from different countries. 3. Work on project

Discussion about the last working period of the project: gathering a dossier of best practices. Introduction of the project Wiki for the dossier work.

The Finnish coordinator suggested to gather a dossier of best practices carried out by each partner and to collect them in a devoted social media called ”wikispaces”. All the partners agreed on that suggestion and right away the new space is open. See http://ieol.wikispaces.com/ . Going back to the last working period of the project, the future steps were discussed and approved as presented by Johanna Garant. The new project will be on:

social media tools in field of education;
social media tools to be used by unemployed people who are looking for a job

IPL from Leiria will be the applicant coordinator and the new project type will be “Transversal KA3”.

During the meeting the Polish and Finnish learners have been accompanied visiting the most important sites near Adria. Indeed the have visited Pomposa abbey, Comacchio and Ferrara towns.

Learners and teachers, all together, have visited Padua city. The learners and the teachers have performed popular songs.

Besides the Finnish learners and teachers have visited Venice.

Photographic Contest
At the conclusion of the "Photography Course" a photographic competition is announced for all the people who have taken part in the performed activities in class and online.

Regulations
1 - The contest theme is divided into three categories:
• "men and women around me";
• “imaginative products"
• “subject freely chosen between “Animals and natural environments",
which, for the composition quality, the particular conditions of light and other details, stimulates our reflection or can transmit special emotions”.

2 - Each participant can send not more than two photographs for each category.

3 - Each photo must be sent not before the 4th April 2011 and not later than the 17th April 2011 to the Flickr group “ IEOL – PhotoContest”.

4 - The photos will be evaluated by a jury composed of 10 members: 2 for each of the institutions involved in the Grundtvig project IEOL (Finnish, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and Italian institutions). Each juryperson will express two votes for each category.

5 - The jury will examine the photos in the period from the 18th April 2011 to the 1st May 2011. The coordinator of each institution will send, via e-mail, the results to the teachers of the course from the 1st to the 3rd of May.

6- The mail will be published and the proclamation of the winners will take place on the 9th May 2011 on the website of the IEOL project, where the three winning photographies will be published.

IEOL Tutorials

Dear friends,

Johanna and Reeta have set up a Wiki so that we could share our best practices. I promised them to make a youtube tutorial to help you in the process of participating in it. The two tutorials I have made are show below.

First, please wait for an email that I will sent you in the next couple of days. If you see tutorial nº1 you will see that you must have that email in hands to make that tutorial (setting up an account).

So, in short:
1. See tutorial nº 1 now, so that you know what email to expect in the next few days
2. When you get the email, please see tutorial nº 1 again to complete the wiki "subscription"
3. Then, see tutorial nº 2 to start editing!!!!

Sorry for the bad quality of the sound and video editing... to little time in my hands, and so many things to do....

Dossier of good practices

Dear all!

During the last project period we need to produce a dossier of good practices (and challenges) of using social media in adult education. Since there was a lot of interest Filipe's presentation of wikis in the last meeting, we decided to establish an IEOL wiki for that purpose.

In a few days Filipe will send everyone an invitation to join the project's wiki. He has also promised to make a YouTube tutorial to teach everyone to use it. The idea is that everyone would join the wiki and explore it a little before our meeting in Adria, and we could then work on the structure of the wiki for the purpose of gathering good practices.

Good practices emerging

We anticipated many of the things that have now been confirmed as good practices. For instance, we already knew from the beginning that students need time to learn to master the different social media tools, but what was surprising was the great amount of time that was needed. Also, you have to tell and show several times, what the students are expected to do, how and to what purpose we use the tools and where to look for help. We gave them written instructions on each tool, which is a good practice, but not all found them on the blog. Peer tutoring worked fairly well, though, but only if you asked for help. Here we concluded: especially in the beginning take little steps, give time and don´t introduce too many tools.

What was surprising, was that they didn´t find using the Google-documents as their own work space for group work as rewarding as we would have expected. This might be partly due to different level of commitment in some students, partly to unclear perception of the role of the Google-document, but also to the assignments given. For later assignments we decided to narrow the topics of assignments down. Then, on the other hand, students have written really long good texts..

The Google- documents were intended for writing which was then commented on a language learning perspective. Inserting the comments proved to be the clearest and the least time consuming way to do this. Deadlines were given, but out of the teachers point of view they should also be keptJ

All in all, students enjoyed using the blog, and even with the little voluntary practice on using the Skype, that proved to be a success with the students who managed to use it.

Dear all

Our next meeting in Adria is getting nearer! The Italian partners have made an agenda that (at least to me) looks really good. In order to have a good and productive meeting, there are a few things that we all need to prepare in advance. Here is a reminder:

1. Make sure that your students evaluate the course they are participating in. If you have trouble using the Google questionnaire in English, please let me know. Filipe has solved the problem by making a Portuguese version with the same questions. Anyway, the most important thing is that we get comparable feedback data.

2. Gather good practices and challenges from your courses concerning learning to use social media tools. We will discuss these in our meeting.

3. We will also have to discuss what to do during the last project period. Please think of ideas and suggestions that we can all discuss together. This also concerns ideas for a new project.

Torredonjimeno, my town.

Torredonjimeno is an Andalucian Town near the City of Jaen.
Its 14,000 inhabitants are mainly farmers: Torredonjimeno is one of the most prolific olive oil producers in the world.
The Town Hall was built in the 17th century. It is located in the old part of the town and near it you can visit the Castle. There, you can admire a duplicate of a Visigothic treasure found in Torredonjimeno in 1926.
The population is mainly Catholic and there are two parishes: Saint Peter´s and Saint Mary´s. There are also two small churches, two convents and in the outskirts of the city, you can visit the Chapel of the Patron Saints, Saint Cosme and Saint Damian, and the Chapel of our Lady of Consolacion.

If you are up for a walk, there are many parks, gardens and squares.
And if what you want is to enjoy the local festivities, there are plenty to choose: Holy Week (which has been declared a Festival of National Traditional Interest) in
March/April, "Las Cruces" festival in May, the funfair in honour of St Peter and St Paul in June, the pilgrimage to the Chapel our Lady of Consolacion in September and the festivities and fireworks in honour of Saint Cosme and Saint Damian also in September.
So, come to Torredonjimeno and you will enjoy its architecture, its people and its traditions.

That’s already a reality: an English online course level A1 is working on the moodle platform

thanks to IEOL Grundtvig Project funded by European Commission.

Started in November is now in its 3^rd month of life. How is it going? After twenty-seven subscriptions, seventeen students are really using the platform. The teacher of English Salvatore Filella, getting through a series of technical difficulties, prepared the lessons consisting in presentations, audios, cards, videos and so on distributed in fifteen units. In November he was glad to open the course on the moodle platform addressing the students with the following message:”Welcome to our online English course level A1! You can have access to it using user name and password delivered to each of you. As a matter of fact that is our first English course online so what you all will find here is to be considered as “a work in progress" (lavori in corso) and subject to improvements, that is: something new will be added, something will be modified, something will be deleted, it depends on your needs and your requests. Your collaboration will be precious. Write down your suggestions in the forum.Take care. Greetings from Turkey. Salvatore.” Indeed this message was sent from Turkey were Salvatore was for a meeting. In the next meeting in Italy all partners will have a closer look at the work done together with the other course online about digital photos held by Michele, Stefano and Francesco. So long! Dear Filipe,
I agree deeply with your comments about the usefulness of the social networks in order to carry out collaborative work and collaborative learning.
Anyway I believe that many people are confusing the virtual friendship with the real friendship, made of real experiences lived together with own friends, getting up early in the morning for walking in the woods, climbing the mountains, fishing, sailing the seas and so on. I believe the men are the synthesis of their real experiences made of enthusiasm, feelings, love, fears lived together. Obviously I am talking about the involvement of bodily, psychological and emotional parts of a living being. Paraphrasing Descartes, who told “dubito ergo sum” I say “esperisco ergo sum” . Therefore I think that people, who spend a lot of their time chatting or sending photos by social media, take up their real life's time.

Social Networks in Portugal

Hello everyone,

It hasn't been a busy week here at IPL as most students and teachers are preparing their Christmas holidays. But our “Akademicos”, which is our school newspaper and which is totally created by students, had a thematic issue concerning social networks. Some of its focus has been given to their use by Erasmus students, to “connect” to their country land friends. Also, me and Antonia have been asked to write its editorial.
On reflecting on this task, we thought on IEOL and the use we give to such tools. We transcribe here some parts of the article we wrote. It’s also some “food for thought” for our group and project.

Some years ago the Internet has seen the rise of a set of services that made its users “producers” of information rather than mere “consumers”. The blog and the wiki have been the “icon” of this revolution (coined Web 2.0) and users used them to produce personal information such as their global opinions on world issues.
Today a new type of service, social networks, is the icon of this revolution. But instead of using these tools to “produce information”, users are using them to “produce relationships”. We use them to share feelings, states of mind, emotions. We use them to create relations. This is the way the technological platforms for these services are oriented: we click an “I like” button and a relationship becomes stronger.
This is an extraordinary technology which will certainly evolute in the future. What can be the face of such evolution? We personally believe that these technologies will blend and participate in other human activities, such as collaborative work and collaborative learning. We already see some of these platforms, such as Facebook, to allow events scheduling and “group” management, but new tools will rise (although for now, we can argue, it is just the “communication platform” that is set, which is not a small feature!). But in the future we will certainly see “tools for learning” in these platforms. A kind of “I like” button to build learning relations.
A tremendous future. Let’s hope that its implementation is near.

Our experience has been unforgettable, We visited some cities that were worth visiting. The time we spent together with the Spanish and foreing students who took part in the meeting and with the teachers themselves was very good.The Portuguesse people were very friendly, they told us legends and stories about their country and we did the same. They have been very exciting days. We felt young again like when we were in school and University. Now, we have a certificate that says we have been part of an European project, not everybody has one!The only problem with the trip was the time, we wish that we could have stayed a bit longer.

Our English group has started its Christmas holiday, which means that we don´t have any contact lessons before January, but we keep in touch by email and the students will be working on a mutual assignment on the group blog. Have you watched our Christmas party video yet? We invited a few students from the group "Finnish for foreigners" to join us over a cup of mulled wine and Finnish Christmas goodies.

The experiences from our trip to Portugal inspired us and our students so much that we are nine people going to Italy in February, six students and three teachers. We are also looking forward to getting in contact with students in our partner organizations and, of course, looking forward to meeting some of them in Italy, too.

For now, we would like to wish you a very merry Christmas.

Results of the meeting of Leiria (20th November 2010)

The attainment of the objectives of the learning Partnership is made nearer. Particularly we have appreciated in the report of the Finnish group the combined use of google docs with wordpress.
Concerning the constructivist approach presented by the Portuguese we’d like to underline the following aspect: to evaluate what and how an adult learns through the decoding of cognitive maps employed by the examined representative sample.
Particularly the tool employed to discover the cognitive maps has aroused a lot of interest. According to us, in a future project, an experimentation could already be initialized directed to fight the racism and the xenophobia in the adult world that is a priority of LLP underlined in these last years.
Through the care of the language we can change and get clean our concepts, too.
The Spanish and Polish groups finally have showed that through the blog and a good structuring of the adult learners’ groups it is possible to get shortly time good results.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE MEETING IN LEIRIA

We, all the teachers, have got together to evaluate how the meeting in Leiria went, and all of us have reached the same conclusion: that it has been a very good one. These are the reasons for this evaluation:

The working atmosphere has been the appropriate one to be able to reach the objectives we all had in mind: Johanna, with her smiling face, has directed the working sessions very well and we have tackled the objectives and prepared efficiently each one's tasks in anticipation for the next meeting in Italy.

We have to point out the good job the hosts have done towards us. They fulfilled the needs we had and they tried to follow through the timetables, didn't you, Pedro?

As we visited some of the IPL's schools, we were able to visit different places and this has been a very good experience. As far as the attention paid to our students by the IPL members, our impression is that they have done an outstanding job and for this reason, our students have an excellent impression of the meeting, specially living together with the Portuguese people. Apart from this, they have had the opportunity to visit some cities: Lisbon, Bathalla, Leiria and due to this they have got more cultural information and learnt different cultures.

The students are also working on this topic and once they have finished it, we will post it to the blog. Apart from this, the new technologies students, some of them took part in the meeting in Leiria, are preparing another work with some photographs of the meeting , and we will show you soon.

Comments

During the meeting the coordinator suggested concrete activities, useful suggestions to carry out the project and to achieve the project objectives; each planned topic has been debated. The future activities and the respective objectives have been clear and feasible and all the partners will carry out the agreed activities.

It was interesting the reflection about the “constructivism”, as a good educational method to help the students to build their knowledge. In our opinion the constructivism teaching methodology is effective in the field of adults teaching and, at the same time, a winning approach for the on line learning.

One of the most important aspects of the meeting was the participation of the Spanish and Finnish learners. They had the great occasion to visit a modern institute, to discover a nice country and to meet people from different countries, to have the opportunity to practice their English.

During the meeting, we have learnt important information about Wikispaces thanks to Philipe.

Our main objectives for the next part of the project

We believe that for increasing the on line communication we should

assist our students to improve their English knowledge;
look for all the activities which are useful to stimulate our students to familiarize with tools of social media in order to interact on line with learners from the countries of the partnership.

This way we will give them the possibility to exchange actively information and experiences with the adult learners from other countries.

Real collaboration

When starting this project, we hoped that it would help create some real-life interaction between students in various countries. For us, it is important that our students can practice their English and communication skills in real contexts with real people.

Now, we believe that this will be achieved on two levels. Firstly, the students who came to Portugal with us got to practice their speaking skills with the Portuguese and Spanish students. They were "thrown in at the deep end" and had to manage by themselves, without one of us teachers by their sides at all times. This way, they got a positive experience that they could manage with the language skills they have. It is important for them to realize that you don't have to be perfect in order to get by in English. This idea worked well in Portugal, and after this first visit we have many more students who are excited about the upcoming visits to Italy and Spain!

Secondly, the students on the "Let's Get Social" course are excited about communicating with their counterparts in the other partner organisations. They really hope that their blog will be interesting to students in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Poland. They are also looking forward to seeing what other students in the other countries are doing.

As to increasing online communication, the meeting in Portugal showed concretely what we have already thought to ourselves: that in order to encourage online collaboration, two requirements must be met. First of all, the themes must be authenticl, and really interesting to the students. They need to be such that the students can relate to them, and that they have a real reason to do what they are required to do. Secondly, although we hope that real, authentic interaction will grow out of this, initially a structure needs to be created with set themes and a preliminary schedule.

After doing all this, we hope that this project will encourage our students to reach out to the other students and that they will all share things with each other, be it in the form of stories, pictures, music, or whatever else they can think of.

Hello dear partners!

We are following with the workshops about information technology as you already know. Next Tuesday, we have a new session.

We are almost at the end of the academic year and at this time, we have a lot of different activities in the centre and some of them are outside, in the streets, since the temperature is excellent. As an example, we have made a "MayCross" in our playground. This is a traditional party that is celebrated in Andalucia to welcome the spring and there you can find a lot of flowers and traditional decorative objects. Here you have a photograph.

Our students that are taking place in the course so as to get the official certificate have already done the examination and the results have been great. Almost all of them have passed them.

In the next weeks, we have a "cultural week". There are a lot of activities: poetry, dance, theatre, manual crafts, conferences.

We would like to share all this activities with you all.

Course description:
The aim of the course is to use a foreign language in authentic environments, to learn about your own and other cultures and to use social media tools for interaction. The participants will meet face to face every other week, and meet online between lessons. Contact lessons will consist of meetings with foreign visitors and guided visits to local places of interests, such as museums. The language of the visits and guided tours is English. There will also be contacts with European partners. The students will have an opportunity to travel with the teachers to meet partners in Portugal, Spain or Italy (additional cost). An ICT teacher will participate in the course to assist in using social media. The course is suitable for everyone, regardless of language skills (not for absolute beginners). Spanish and Italian can be used in communicating with European partners. The students will benefit from having the possibility to use the Internet outside of class.

Dried salt cod

Hello everybody!
As agreed I am sending you the best Italian recepi to cook the salt cod (bacalao / bacala / turska / dorsza )

Dried salt cod “alla vicentina”
Ingredients.- 1 kg of dried salt cod, 1 small onion, 1 clove of garlic, 4 anchovies, 1 small spoon of finely chopped parsley, ¼ of a litre of white dry wine, ¾ of a litre milk, 3 spoons of olive oil, 30 grams of butter, 50 grams of grated parmesan, salt, pepper, flour, cinnamon.

Preparation.- Put the dried salt cod in fresh water for 48 hours (change the water every 6 hours).
Cut the dried salt cod in square pieces (more or less 5 cm). Dip each piece in flour and put them in a baking tray. Sprinkle all the pieces with a lot of grated parmesan, cinnamon (not much), salt pepper. Finely chop the onion and the garlic in thin pieces and fry them lightly. When the thin pieces of onion and garlic become blonde add the anchovies (cut in small pieces). Fry again for few minutes. Add the parsley and the white wine. When all the wine evaporates, add the milk and the butter. As soon as the butter melts away, pour the sauce in the baking tray covering all the pieces of dried salt cod.
Put the baking tray into the oven to reduce the liquid. Serve with polenta and white wine.

Here you are the recipe to prepare the polenta.
Ingredients.- 250 grams of corn meal, 1 litre of water, salt.
Preparation.- Pour out the water into a pot, add sufficient salt and the corn meal mixing continuously. Heat the water (and corn meal) until it boils and let it simmer gently for one hour (mixing continuously).

Now is the best time to cook the Dried salt cod “alla vicentina”, not in the future.
Enjoy your salt cod and have a good time there.

The world of social media

We had an interesting lecture here at Valkeakoski Adult Education Centre last Friday. Planning coordinator Satu Nurmela from the University of Turku gave an overview of what social media is and what some of its pedagogical applications might be.

The world is changing and the gap between the world of a teenager and the world of a senior citizen has never been wider. Eight out of the Top 10 websites in Finland are social media sites. You can check the situation in your country at http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries. This illustrates the impact of interactive media on our lives.
